Sapeurs, Smarteez and Chris Saunders

by chloe on April 14, 2010

Recently I discovered the Kinshasa “sapeurs”(La Societé des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes or SAPE), a group of fashion-devoted Congolese youth (the one pictured being particularly young) whose religious idols are the likes of Issey Miyake and Versace. They apparently risk their lives and any available funds to look fresh to death for a day. The photo below courtesy of COLORS magazine.
sapeurI also met with the talented South African photographer Chris Saunders last night, who is in town shooting the Benetton MyTime campaign. Here’s a video of the casting while in Johannesburg last month; it features those dope Soweto designers and street-style gurus the SMARTEEZ!

More to come soon on how these fabulous fashion freaks are connected . . . any guesses post in the comments!

Pieter Hugo Shoots Nollywood Stars

by chloe on April 6, 2010

South African photographer Pieter Hugo chose Nigeria’s film industry - Nollywood - as his latest subject matter. I’ve been hearing about Nollywood for awhile now, but this is the first time it has visually come to life for me. Check out the dramatic moments here and go see Hugo’s show at Yossi Milo Gallery through April 17. Photos below courtesy of the Michael Stevenson gallery in Cape Town, South Africa.

January 21, 2010

Was just reminded of this amazing street photographer I discovered when I was in Johannesburg, South Africa early last year . . . Nontsikelelo “Lolo” Veleko has made an international name for herself by shooting the unique and modern swagger of the young African urbanite.
Particularly stylish recurring subjects are the Smarteez, the Soweto-based crew who [...]

DOKTER AND MISSES Designs

June 9, 2009

While I was in South Africa a few months ago I had the pleasure of hanging with Katy Taplin and Adriaan Hugo, the fantastic design team behind the futuristically chic furniture and fashion label/Johannesburg-based boutique DOKTER AND MISSES. Katy and Riaan are not only a gorgeous and lovely couple and business duo (pictured at right), [...]

June 8, 2009

This week was Blk Jks week in New York. While I’m a hip-hop loyalist and only rarely promote indie rock bands, these South African gentleman make the cut. Combining dub, punk, dark rock, and even a little black metal, the Johannesburg foursome (frontman Lindani Buthelezi, drummer Tshepang Ramoba, guitarist Mpumi Mcata and bassist Molefi Makananise, [...]

What Mos Has Been Up To

May 13, 2009

Photo: Chris Saunders
Mos Def’s Black on Both Sides is one of my favorite albums of all time. When it dropped I was in high school, and I had never even been to Brooklyn. Since then, I’ve enjoyed seeing Mos Def get his actor on in weird movies like Be Kind Rewind and Hitchhiker’s Guide to [...]
