Sapeurs, Smarteez and Chris Saunders

Recently I discovered the Kinshasa “sapeurs”(La Societé des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes or SAPE), a group of fashion-devoted Congolese youth (the one pictured being particularly young) whose religious idols are the likes of Issey Miyake and Versace. They apparently risk their lives and any available funds to look fresh to death for a day. The photo below courtesy of COLORS magazine.
sapeurI also met with the talented South African photographer Chris Saunders last night, who is in town shooting the Benetton MyTime campaign. Here’s a video of the casting while in Johannesburg last month; it features those dope Soweto designers and street-style gurus the SMARTEEZ!

BLK JKS “Molalatadi” video feat. Straw vs Gold designs

Check out this cool new video by the Jo’burg boys (expected back in NYC sometime early next year), filmed in Coney Island and South Africa. At 1:27 you can get a good look at Linda Buthelezi rockin’ an original Straw vs Gold black bleach-dyed tee under his button-down. That’s what’s up. Buy one now, they’re staples all year round.
