New Badu: Return of the Ankh Preview

When I was younger, I didn’t think Erykah Badu could sing. Dead-ass, I thought she was tone deaf. Then I realized her off-key trademark style just follows in the footsteps of fellow trail-blazers Billie Holiday (who is always behind the beat) and Nina Simone (who’s non-traditional phrasing is often without a melody at all). On her newest album, New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh, Badu continues to seduce with her warm, atonal vocals and hilariously honest subject matter on tracks like “Undercover Over-Lover”, but departs from the precisely digital and political theme of New Amerykah Part I: 4th World War. While it’s a sequel that feels mature and relevant - “Window Seat” shows a newfound serenity - it is at once a throwback to the beloved early albums Baduizm and Mama’s Gun. Part II is like a beat-driven, vibe-heavy mixtape with would-be tributes to Biggie (”Get Money”) and satires of gold-digging chickenheads. Although the album doesn’t officially drop until the end of February, the leak track “Jump In The Air” - which spotlights vocals by Badu, Bilal and Li’l Wayne and features ten different emcees on as many versions - will be released every few weeks in an underground campaign. Check out the full track listing below and stay tuned for more album updates . . .

Props to Ned from Green Owl for this little Jay Electronica x Just Blaze track “Exhibit C” off Tony Touch’s Toca Tuesdays mix last month. I’ve been a fan of Jay for a while now . . . though besides his mixtape What the Fuck is a Jay Electronica, I couldn’t tell you what he’s [...]

Shafiq Husayn is one third of production hot-house Sa-Ra - along with Taz Arnold and Om’Mas Keith, respectively - and the big LA homie is about to release his debut solo album Shafiq En’ A-Free-Ka via Plug Research. The title’s double entendre draws from “Ka”, the ancient Kemetic (Egyptian) signifier of mind or spirit, and [...]

Zap Mama Free at Metrotech 8/6

August 5, 2009

Erykah Badu played last night on Governers Island (with would-be protege Janelle Monae) and I passed on the $40 ticket. Then I realized that Ms. Badu’s would-be mentor Zap Mama is playing tomorrow at Metrotech for FREE! For at least a decade, crazy Belgian frontwoman Marie Daulne and her crew have been traversing the planet [...]

New Orleans Jazz Fest Gems

May 1, 2009

I’ve been in New Orleans for over a week now and I have to say it’s bangin’ down here in “sportsmans paradise”. I’ve already gotten to see local outfit Rebirth Brass Band, bounce veteran DJ Jubilee, queen of New Orleans soul Irma Thomas, princess of neo-soul Ms. Erykah Badu, and Etta James, who did call [...]
