DOOM Unexpected Guests

by chloe on December 14, 2009

Doom just released a compilation of sorts - pretty much his hand-picked collection of unreleased material, with features including Ghostface, Sean Price, Vast Aire and Mastah Killah to name a few. You’ve heard a lot of the beats and some of the rhymes before but fuck it, I could listen to DOOM all day (and I do, I do). Check the preview here and listen to a few choice tracks below. . . and think about how much DOOM sounds like Eric Sermon. The Villain is back.

Jay Electronica: One Track Alien

December 8, 2009

Props to Ned from Green Owl for this little Jay Electronica x Just Blaze track “Exhibit C” off Tony Touch’s Toca Tuesdays mix last month. I’ve been a fan of Jay for a while now . . . though besides his mixtape What the Fuck is a Jay Electronica, I couldn’t tell you what he’s [...]

Doom in The New Yorker

September 21, 2009

For those who are nerd-core (MF) Doom fans like me, eat your heart out: the metal-faced villain made a classy appearance in The New Yorker last week. Ta-Nehisi Coates - my fave journalist, Atlantic blogger and hip-hop head - nails Doom’s crotchety (no’homo) comedian caricature, his absurdly genius rhymes and his desire to be the [...]

What I’m Listening to: Mos Def and J Dilla

June 20, 2009

Two new albums just dropped, from two of my favorite artists. One dead, one alive. One a beat legend, the other a rap genius. Mos Def’s latest release, The Ecstatic, comes after several years of subpar musical work (not hating, just saying that nothing compared to Black on Both Sides). As I mentioned in my [...]

What Mos Has Been Up To

May 13, 2009

Mos Def’s Black on Both Sides is one of my favorite albums of all time. When it dropped I was in high school, and I had never even been to Brooklyn. Since then, I’ve enjoyed seeing Mos Def get his actor on in weird movies like Be Kind Rewind and Hitchhiker’s Guide to [...]

SvG Exclusive: Interview w/ staHHr tha Femcee

May 7, 2009

Ever since I heard her murder the track “Still Dope” on Doom’s new Born Like This album, I’ve been digging for information on (Empress) staHHr. Luckily, she’s been sweet enough to give me a minute of her time. Keep reading to learn all about the Atlanta femcee’s history: when she started rhyming (day one), who [...]

Doom Claims Albums with Madlib and Ghostface by end of ‘09

April 28, 2009

Masked supervillain rapper Doom made a lot of hip-hop nerds happy when he released Born Like This last month. Besides changing his name, the metal-faced character has stayed pretty consistent through the years and continues to kill it with the new Bukowski-influenced album full of dope guest appearances. In addition to Ghostface and Raekwon, Atlanta [...]
