Good Hair. . . And Things of This Nature!

by chloe on October 15, 2009

Just saw Good Hair, Chris Rock’s new documentary about the black hair industry and it’s massive global presence. I almost fell out my seat laughing several times. You get to see Al Sharpton back when he was fat and relaxing his hair alongside James Brown; you also get to follow Chris Rock to India to see where all those beautiful weaves really come from (before the bugs get cleaned out!). It’s not stylistically groundbreaking, but it is incredibly informative and entertaining at once. Watch the trailer below and catch it at Union Square or 34th st. . .

I’ve also included this ridiculous adventure to the hair show, which is not as good as Good Hair but still pretty crucial. Why our loyal host(ess) didn’t feel the need to come a little harder on her own look is a mystery . . . but in any event the rest of the characters are worth watching (Colors?! “Beeeeeep Emergency Landing!”). Enjoy and comment!

Soul Power Trailer

by chloe on April 30, 2009

Last night my film-savvy friend sent me the trailer for the movie Soul Power, which is an ill-lookin’ documentary about the epic 1974 African-American meets Africa music festival in Kinshasa, Zaire. You know, the one that coincided with the “Rumble in the Jungle” match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. The one where James Brown, Bill Wsoulpower_l200904281517ithers, Celia Cruz, BB King and many other soul legends played the show of their lives. Need I say more?

Watch the preview now.

I’m in New Orleans as I write this, so I can’t go catch tonight’s 7:30pm showing at the SVA theatre (23rd st btw 8/9 ave), but you should definitely check it out if you’re in the city. Otherwise, I’ll see you for it’s official release on July 10.

April 18, 2009

Remember the Gorillaz? I had forgotten about them for a while . . . but once upon a time two arrogant English dudes (Damon Albarn from Blur and Tank Girl comic author Jamie Hewitt) got sick of watching “MTV rubbish” and decided to create a crazy virtual band called the Gorillaz: 2D, Murdoch, Noodle, and [...]
