Grand Ave Block Party Sept 12

by chloe on September 2, 2010

Every year in September, Senegalese retaurant Le Grand Dakar hosts a neighborhood block party on Grand Ave (btw Clifton and Lafayette). Last year there was a kid’s fashion show, outdoor vendors and delicious food at half-price, but for this year’s 5th anniversary with co-sponsor MoCaDa, the event will be taken to a new level.

he festival focuses on the relationship between Africa and Brooklyn, and the continent’s vibrant presence is felt in the borough in many ways. To mark the Golden Jubilee 50th anniversary of independence in 17 different African nations - including Congo, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal - there will be a ceremony honoring various educators, performing artists and activists including choreographer Bill T. Jones, child activist and force of nature Adelaide Sanford and award-winning actor Jeffrey Wright.

An all day event, there will be plenty of time to eat exotic cuisine, shop for beautiful fabric and catch a variety of talented musicians and performers. Reggae-bluegrass band City Billies (Brooklyn)will make your heart twang with rootsy rhythms, while African emcees Bajah and the Dry Eye Crew (Sierra Leone) and Blitz the Ambassador (Ghana) will get the crowd loud and rowdy with African hip-hop. Sahr Ngaujah, star of Broadway hit FELA! will also perform during the ceremony. To close the event, the award-winnin film Sex, Okra and Salted Butter will be shown.
As the icing on this beautiful multi-cultural cake, there will be a raffle for a round-trip ticket to Lagos, Nigeria!
See you in Brooklyn!

E for Effort Blows Up

by chloe on August 16, 2010

tumblr_l1p3t7noqm1qamzo5o1_400This is looooong overdue but better with a late pass than never, right? Earlier this year, two talented artists and printmaking experts - Rachel Ostrow and Beka Goedde - decided to become designers.
tumblr_kxr0jvxw6y1qaexruArmed with a simple “looseleaf” idea,  E for Effort was born, creating a new wardrobe staple for women, men and even babies.
2Several months and several dozen batches later, the ladies have expanded the line to include totes, onesies, pocket tees, racerback tanks and burnout tunics in a variety of sizes, each with E for Effort’s signature androgynous nerd-print.

1E for Effort has been picked up by the prestigious boutique Artware Editions and repped by  Dee and Ricky, as well as sold to anyone who can get their hands on the notebook paper apparel. You can catch me on the corner in a burnout tunic, and check out Artware Editions to purchase one. Contact eforeffort@gmail.com for more information . . .

Hank & Cupcakes Plays Brooklyn Bowl

June 25, 2010

He is Hank. She is Cupcakes. A Brooklyn based, Israeli import, Hank & Cupcakes has garnered a generous fan base thanks to their charismatic, and engaging live shows. They are a highly energetic electro/pop duo, which sounds like neither pop nor electronic music. Their songs are both minimal and fascinating (a feat not easily accomplished). [...]

Veterans of Fashion Vol. I: Wild Cat @ Grand Army

June 13, 2010

There aren’t really any words for this this wildcat I, er, spotted today while riding through Grand Army Plaza. When I asked if I could take her picture, this lady acted all nonchalant and asked my why. Because you look beautiful. And because the animal print trend really needs to step its game up. Shouts [...]

Japanther Dish Up Rock n Roll Ice Cream

April 27, 2010

Japanther is the call of the wild, state of the Brooklyn artist gone band. This is the video from “Challenge,” their 2008 ode to BK.  Tales of house parties gone awry with flying dishes pepper the growth of this punk rock duo that formed after meeting at Pratt Institute in 2001. Yep, it’s the Brooklyn-artist [...]

SvG Meets Dee and Ricky

February 22, 2010

A couple months ago, SvG designs were featured in an LES pop-up boutique alongside the fashion-forward wares of Dee and Ricky. The pair of Staten Island twins (of triplets, they have a sister) dropped out of high school to start designing innovative toy-based accessories, suddenly the toast of the town when Marc Jacobs commissioned a [...]
